What’s a major? Why is it important?

  • It’s a make up of all the information and classes you study in college. When you graduate from college you’ll get a degree in that major which will lead to your career.

Do I have to know what I want to study to get into college?

  • Some colleges, like UT Austin, require you to choose a major when you apply. Most students enter undeclared as their major-meaning they haven’t made up their minds.

If a college doesn’t require me to know my major, why should I be thinking about it in high school?

  • Knowing your major will give you focus and direction. You need to have an idea of what you want to do when you grow up in order to plan for college.

Here are some tips to help you get on the path to finding your major:

  • Discover Your Interests  NOW.
  • Do you like working with people? Do you like to work outside? Do certain topics (astronomy, computers, nature) interest you? Do you do best in English or math?Are you a good artist? Are you good at building or fixing things?
  • Connect Your Interests to a Career:
    Look at Careers Categories to see how your interest Connect with a career.
  • Or Connect Your Career to a Major:
    Look at Major Categories to see how your interest Connect with a career.
  • Connect Your Major/Interests to a College.
  • Choose a college that has the major (s) you might be interested in studying. This is the most important criteria your college of choice must have. Choosing a college that doesn’t have the area you want to study is not smart!
